Currently Making Me Depressed:

This Star Tribune column by Tom Horgen on the new hip-hop establishment "Club New York" - by far the lamest name I have ever heard of for a club, is now open where amazing underground dance music clubs "Level" and "Foundation" used to be. Last year some posers tried to make it a Top 40 club called "Element" and failed, miserably.

I brought Mark Farina, Kaskade, Colette, Roomsa and Lawnchair Generals to Foundation for some of my favorite VimLab shows ever, where everybody was sweatin' it out on the packed-to-capacity dancefloor to some truly incredible deep house music. At one such show I got to introduce my two biggest PR clients - Charlie Lazor, creator of the FlatPak house, and Kaskade, who were big fans of each other's work. I think its what you call..Synergy. Week after week the owners of Foundation, who are friends of mine, brought hugely talented DJs from around the world to spin at their club, but sadly the dance music market here was not strong enough to keep the club going. And sadder still is the fact that this "Club New York" owner, who's company is called "Fun Group Inc" (could this guy be any more original?? such creativity!) who owns other downtown nightlife gems Drink and Spin (both of which I personally avoid like the plague), will probably be successful by playing horrible hip hop that could be heard for free in one's car by turning on the horrendous KDWB. Unfortunately I guess that's what most of the 1st Ave bar frequenting, overly tanned, white haired Minnesota girls who still let their thongs show and say "us girls like to party" and douches in their Ed Hardy tees reeking of Axe spray and desperation want..well, knock yourselves out at "Club New York," people. I want no part of it.
