Foodie News Currently Making Me Happy: NYC's Rosa Mexicano To (Hopefully) Replace TGIF in City Center

A delicious NYC based Mexican restaurant within walking distance of my loft replacing a horrible chain restaurant that went out of biz and now sits empty? Yes please.

According to the Pioneer Press, " New Yorkers have long been going to Rosa Mexicano for tableside guacamole, pomegranate margaritas and authentic Mexican food. Now, it looks like Minnesotans might be doing the same thing. A branch of the upscale restaurant is on the drawing board to debut this summer at City Center in downtown Minneapolis, in the former T.G.I. Friday's. (The T.G.I. Friday's in Roseville called it quits last week. Stay tuned for what will go into that spot.)

Founded in 1984 by Josefina Howard, Rosa Mexicano quickly became a New York City destination for its authentic, regional cuisine. Now, there are nine locations, including Miami and L.A. The restaurant did not return calls for elaboration, but it looks like diners are in for a surprise. According to the website: "We are Rosa Mexicano and we are not the Mexican you expect." Hopefully, that's a good thing."

I really hope this happens. The fact that Fridays in Roseville also went out of business gives me hope that other people are finally figuring out what I've known all along: suburban chain restaurants like Friday's (or like we call all of them: TGI McBenniBees) suck. For the same price, you can get such a better meal at smaller, chef owned restaurants. Out with the burbs and lame chain restaurants, in with urban living and great restaurants in downtown Minneapolis.
