I've worked with Charlie Lazor, creator of the FlatPak house off and on since early 2005, handling PR, Marketing and Sales for him. Charlie is a co-founder of Blu Dot and I always loved their furniture - Jeff had a few pieces and I thought their website and whole company philosophy was hilarious and cool, so when I moved to MN I sent them my resume. They wrote back and said they didn't really have any jobs for me, but they liked the music on the VimLab site, which made me pretty happy. I was even happier to get a call from Charlie a week later saying he was starting this new company called FlatPak house and wanted to chat with me. We met at Sebastian Joe's for an interview, got along famously and soon I was giving tours of his amazing house near hidden beach on Cedar Lake - even getting to house sit for one incredible weekend - and talking to editors and producers at the NY Times, Newsweek, Dwell, Chicago Tribune, Associated Press, CBS Sunday Morning, "What's With That House" and many others about the prefab story. Architecture was a completely new type of client for me but one that I loved learning about, and in the process I've met a bunch of really cool architects, even leading to the purchase of our amazing loft, which I wouldn't have known about had we not met said architects.
Anyhoo, one of the first serious clients I spoke to on the phone back in 2005 (aside from Christina Ricci who wanted to build one in LA and Stephen Jenkins of Third Eye Blind who wanted to build one in SF) had a gorg little piece of property in Sausalito overlooking the city and bay. And last year, this incredibly gorgeous FlatPak house was completed on that property. It's actually for sale for about $3 million which I desperately wish I had - you can see more amazing photos here.
After hiking through Muir Woods yesterday, Jeff and I wanted to try to find the FlatPak in Sausalito on our way to the city, so I called my friend in the office, got the address and with the help of Google Maps on our iPhones, we managed to find it. Was kind of hard to take pics of the actual house without being inside it but got some good ones of the Golden Gate Bridge from above and the view of Stinson Beach from the back of the hill leading to the house. It was crazy windy and kind of scary up there - so windy in fact that my little orange ski cap blew right off my head but I didn't realize it until we got to Betelnut and I looked in the mirror in the restroom. Whoops. We met a neighbor who said they frequently lose power due to the wind, but I guess that's the price you pay for some of the best views in the country.
