Today's LA Times has a nice little write-up on my friend Nick's new West Hollywood branch of GYM - a gay sports bar. He and his biz partner opened the first GYM in Chelsea a few years ago and it has really taken off. There are many athletic gays who enjoy playing and watching sports..its not all Liza and glitter you know. We went there for way too many free cocktails last year and the place was beyond packed at 5 pm on a Sunday. LA has embraced the idea and its already a hit, of course.
I think this is especially cool because Nick used to work as a patent attorney in Minneapolis and he would come out to San Francisco for depositions all the time when we lived there. So of course we would take him to the swankiest martini and champagne lounges in town and proceed to drink our faces off on his law firm's tab and laugh hysterically, like you do. We took him to the Bubble Lounge once and ran into NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon. Rando. But like prettymuch every other lawyer or person I know who went to law school, he decided he hated practicing law. Why anyone goes to law school is beyond me - you couldn't pay me to go through that hell. Once you get through it, then you have to actually go be a lawyer. Ewww. Anyhoo, he sold his house in Kenwood, traveled the world for a year, moved to NYC and opened a ridiculously successful gay sports bar that is enabling him to happily live the life he wants to lead. I'm so glad he did and know these bars that were a totally new concept for people will be a hit around the country and make him lots and lots of dolla bills. So proud.
