Welcome To The Neighborhood: HauteDish
Sunday was El Jefe's birthday, so after lounging most of the day to recover from hosting our annual Jefe B-Day/Holiday Cocktail Party the night before and hitting the CBC for a hot tub and steam, we finally made it to HauteDish. All summer long we'd walk by it and say, "we should really go there one of these nights," but always opted for somewhere with a patio to enjoy our 2.5 months of nice weather. After hearing many people's rave reviews and that Metro Mag named HauteDish their "Restaurant of the Year" we finally got there though and I'm so glad we did.
Located in the old Cafe Havana space, it feels cozy and homey, kind of like someone's hip warehouse district living room with lots of exposed brick and hardwood floors. The bar area and comfy booths are warm and inviting, perfect for a snowy winter's night...I'm sure we'll be popping in to that bar more often to grab a drink. And while there are only a few a la carte options on the menu in addition to the 4 course tasting menu for $30, everything we had was divine. We started with the house salad - Ice Berg Wedge, Hydroponic Tomatoes, English Cucumber Spirals, Homemade Dill Buttermilk and French dressing and Bleu Cheese crumbles. I'm not sure what a Hydroponic Tomato is exactly but it was the best one I've ever had, seriously. We split two entrees - the Mac & Cheese with King Crab, Tallegio and Truffle which is one of the best dishes I've tasted anywhere in MN..prettymuch perfection, and the Tator Tot HauteDish - Braised short ribs, French cut baby green beans, Porcini béchamel and Potato croquets, which was fantastic and went splendidly with my Willamette Valley Pinot Noir or the tap beer Jefe ordered that is also made near Portland, OR along the Deschutes River, where I went River Rafting with my family growing up.
We didn't get dessert because we still had a few delicious banana cupcakes with cream cheese frosting I had ordered from Cake Eater Bakery for Jefe's bday party when he told me his favorite cake is "banana bread," but our very friendly waitress gave Jefe one of his beers free for his bday. After a comfort food filled meal like that, its nice to be only a few blocks from home and we promptly got cozy and watched "Dexter" which is definitely my favorite show right now..I am loving this season and can't seem to get enough. It will be nice to walk to HauteDish when the weather is nicer and then take a walk along the river to work off a few of those very delicious calories. So glad they are in my hood.
