WMC: Sunday

Our last day at WMC actually turned out to be my favorite one. We had to check out of our hotel and get down to the Surfcomber for a pool party Kaskade was spinning at around 1:00. Security was ridiculously tight and apparently they couldn't find us on the list, so I texted Kaskade's wife and found out that due to the pouring rain, he wasn't going to spin. She said to meet them at their hotel and we'd all have lunch, which sounded fab to us. By the time we met up in their lobby, things had changed again and he was scheduled to go back on, so we skipped lunch and went back to the pool party. The best way to roll through all the lines and security is to go in with the artist, and they escorted us through the packed party right up to the stage and promptly placed all access wrist bands on us which allowed us to hang out there all day and get free drinks from the bottle service for artists and VIPs. Very nice. We caught part of a deep, rockin set by the extremely smiley Brit Desyn Masiello and then Kaskade went on and played a latin tinged progressive house set mixed with his original hits as it poured rain all around us. We were under a tent on stage but had dirty feet from the near flood up there that they had to keep squeegeying off. After his set, we left for a bit to have some lunch, and then Jeff and I went back into the party which I don't think we would have been allowed to do if we didn't have the VIP wrist bands because they had huge No Re-Entry signs posted anywhere.

I'm really glad we went back though because I really wanted to check out some new music and DJs I hadn't seen before, and pool parties where the artists play hour-long sets are a fantastic way to do just that. We got to catch part of an awesome set by Dirty South who was nominated for a Grammy for his remix of Kaskade's hit track, "Sorry." And we saw one of the best electro and progressive house sets I have heard in a long time by my favorite new DJ discovery: Sebastian Ingrosso. He had so much energy and was dancing and jumping around to amp up the crowd the entire time - and the crowd responded in earnest. We were talking to a promoter from Puerto Rico who pointed to Sebastian, told us it was Kaskade and said he was about to go on. It took a lot of convincing to make him realize we knew for a fact this was not the case. Sometimes its hard to figure out who DJs are if you don't already know what they look like, but this guy was filled with misinformation because I asked him where Sebastian Ingrosso was from and he told me assuredly, "Italy." He kind of looked Italian and I could picture him smoking ciggys at an outdoor cafe with a cappuccino so I didn't question it but after some online research have learned he is from Sweden and part of the "Swedish House Mafia" that consists of Eric Prydz, Axwell and Steve Angello - all of whom have produced and/or remixed tracks I like. I always seem to love music that comes from the Nordic countries, so this didn't surprise me. Also wasn't surprised to learn that I already had two of Sebastians' tracks in my iTunes - via Kaskade's recent #1 mix album "The Grand," and that Steve Angello was behind the remix of "Gypsy" that everyone kept playing all weekend - I did not mind, its an amazing remix.

Axwell was actually up next and I didn't like his set quite as much, but it was still good. We met a fun couple from Philly who are huge Axwell fans and hung out with them for a bit before grabbing our luggage and heading to the airport and sadly, back to chilly MN. All in all, a fantastic weekend getaway with my wonderful husby, filled with amazing music, great friends, good food, surf, sand and South Beach. Can't ask for much more.
