As one of my friends hilariously put as his Facebook status: "First River and now Corey! WHY GOD!?!??!"
The LA Times reports that 80s heartthrob Corey Haim - the much cuter Corey, with much better hair in my opinion - died early this morning of a drug overdose at the age of 38. He had struggled with drug addiction for many years - at one time taking as many as 85 valium in a single day. I don't know how someone can stay alive and awake with that many pills in their system. Very sad, esp for all of us who grew up in the '80s and saw one or both of the Coreys on virtually every cover of Bop, Teen Beat, Teen and Tiger Beat and would stampede a mall appearance for a glimpse of one of them during American teen girls' obsession phase. Pretty sure there were Corey pillows..not that I ever had or wanted one. It's really not natural for anyone to have that much adoration, so of course when it goes away they are going to turn to drugs to get close to that feeling once again.
**Note to self: No matter how cute he might be, don't let Gus get involved with TV sitcoms or Hollywood movies as a kid or teen. Life doesn't turn out well for most child stars - Gawker has a sad but true breakdown of child stars gone bad here.
