Had a little date night to finally see this movie at The Lagoon last night, followed by a late dinner of happy hour sushi and my favorite salad at Fusion (new Zeno). Jeff and I both loved this movie - Colin Firth is nominated for an Oscar and probably won't get it but I think he deserves one. Highly stylized, it brought us right into the world of Los Angeles in 1962 - a time I would have loved to have been there. My mom grew up in the Hollywood Hills during that time so I have an idea of what it was like. Pretty amazing that this was made by Tom Ford, and that its his first movie. But with how gorgeous and lush the cinematography is, including a few spectacular specimens of man candy, not surprising.
I don't understand why the Coen Bros "A Serious Man" is nominated for more Oscars - we saw it and were pretty bored..I think you have to be a Jewish man who grew up in St. Louis Park, MN in the 60s ie the Coen Bros, Al Franken or Thomas Freedman (all of whom grew up in the same neighborhood) to get it, but even then - its still just kind of boring. "A Single Man" is by far the superior film. Go see it.
