Culture Vulture: "The Two Gentlemen of Verona" & Eli's

A good friend of mine scored a few incredible seats at an even better price for Shakespeare's "The Two Gentlemen of Verona" at the Guthrie last night. Jeff and I both love going to live theater and have seen many productions at the Guthrie - its fantastic to have such a gorgeous architectural work of art in our neighborhood. Sometimes we just go there for drinks and the view. This production was quite well done and fun to watch because it was set in the 1950s with colorful fashion and catchy little musical interludes. Normally the actors blow me away with their performances, but this one didn't seem to be quite on par with other shows we've seen there. One of my friends mentioned it sort of felt like a college play. I still liked it a lot and am always amazed that Shakespeare could write these stories about the human condition that can be put in any time setting and still work. All the dramas and sitcoms we watch are based on some of his ideas from 400 years ago. "Two Gentlemen of Verona" is known as one of his first plays and somehow the themes still translate. And the dog was really cute - pretty sure it was the same dog used in Annie at the Orpheum that we saw on Valentine's. I definitely recommend checking it out before March 29th when the show ends.

After the play we went to Eli's for a late dinner of comfort food and cocktails and I must say that every time I go there (well, twice) I say: why don't I come here more often? Really need to - everything I've had there is amazing. I had a half order of delicious mac & cheese - by far the best I've had in the city and I'm somewhat of a gourmet mac & cheese connoisseur - a mixed green salad and some bubbly. All in all, a fabulous night.
