According to Forbes magazine, Minneapolis is the most relaxed city in the US. "In No. 1-ranked Minneapolis-St. Paul, joblessness isn't the stress-inducer it is elsewhere: At 7%, the unemployment rate is well below the 9.6% national average. Fewer than 5% of workers spend their mornings stuck in traffic, and 84% of the population reported recent exercise--the best workout rate of any city we surveyed. The metro also scored well for its high percentage of inhabitants that have medical coverage and good general physical health."
It's true - quality of life is pretty sweet here. I love that Mpls is a small city without the lame ghetto crime I experienced in SF when my car windows got smashed in 5 times, has lots of great outdoor activities, a ridic number of lakes, great live theater, live music/DJ scene, fantastic independently owned bars and restaurants, and some of the best people I've ever met. Its super easy to get around and even easier to escape from, esp with what I consider my own personal airline, Sun Country. Not really sure about the 84% reporting recent exercise since fatties abound in MN, but not in Mpls proper. Most of them live in Woodbury and/or Eden Prarie (aka hell on earth/worst suburbs ever.) We do have a lot of great biking/running trails along the river and around the lakes and there are many active people making use of them at all times, even when its freezing. I still don't understand why anyone Rollerblades though..any time I see someone wobbily trying to skate their way around the lake I just want to throw a shoe at them and remind them we're in the year 2010, not 1990 - the year I proudly sported a pair of teal and black Zetra 303s. And haven't worn since.
