Super cheesy "nightclub" Trocaderos in the warehouse district of Minneapolis has gone out of business - apparently they just put a sign on the door that says "Done." Which is what I was the second I walked in to the place several years ago. Way too big, with horrendous 80s zebra and leopard decor, the management had absolutely no idea what they were doing. And I know this because a friend of mine set up a meeting for me when the club first opened to discuss helping them with events/promotions, and when I mentioned MySpace they had never heard of it. I think they had experience in sports bars, like several other wannabe "nightclub owners" in this town who build some of the worst establishments I've seen. So..yeah. Not a surprise. Everyone in the neighborhood hated the place and looked at it as an eye sore, so I am definitely not sad to see them go. It does suck that apparently they left a bunch of promoters, musicians and non-profits high and dry with no place to do the shows they had already booked and no way to get their deposits back. Nice.
It makes me sad that in order to build this house of lameness, they bulldozed the old warehouse district staple Nikki's Cafe that had a gorgeous patio shaded by a big, beautiful tree. I remember going there when I first started coming to visit friends in Minnesota from SF with Jeff in 2000. Even though prettymuch everything on the menu tasted the same, it was cute and cozy, and I really wish it was still there, instead of the monstrosity of a building that is "Trocs." Can someone please bulldoze the building and create a charming indoor/outdoor cafe like Nikki's once again so we can forget Trocaderos ever happened??
